Tarot Tuesday: The 3 of Cups

Every Tuesday, my friend Joy Andreasen brings us Tarot Tuesday. Today's card is the 3 of Cups.

Joy Says: A celebration may be in order today! Or maybe it is a good day to plan a get-together with friends. Remember that no matter what you are going through, your friends are the ones who see you through happy times and challenging times. Appreciate your tribe today.

ABOUT THE CARD:  In the Three of Cups, three young women are dancing with each other in a circle, raising their cups high in the air in a toast of joy and celebration. They look to one another with appreciation, honour and respect, and are bound by their emotional connection and friendship. There is a sense of lifting each other up and celebrating each woman’s unique contribution to the group. The ground is layered with flowers, fruit and a pumpkin, symbolizing the celebration of an abundant harvest and the goodness in life.

6 Things to say to people experiencing grief

Sometimes it's really difficult to know what to say to people who are grieving the loss of a loved one whether it be
a person or pet who passed. Whenever I give my lectures, everyone in the room is grieving for someone. As a medium, finding things to say is a bit easier for me, because I sometimes get messages from spirit at the right time, but for those who don't, I thought this article would help you respond.
Another way you can help them get through their grief is to teach them how spirits communicate from the other side, and how they can recognize signs. That's what my books are about! - So, for people grieving a person, send them "Ghosts and Spirits" or "Lessons Learned from Talking to the Dead." If they're grieving a pet, send them "Pets and the Afterlife" or "Pets and the Afterlife 2" by Rob Gutro

Now, here are the Six Helpful Things You Can Do/Say if Someone You Know Is Grieving:

  1. Ask, "How are you doing?" Then listen patiently to the answer without changing the subject or terminating the conversation. Create a safe space for them to talk about their experience if they would like to. You might feel honored that they trusted you enough to give an honest answer if it's something other than "Fine."
  2. Say that you just found out about their loss. Rather than the obligatory "I'm sorry for your loss," or "I'm sorry that your marriage didn't work out for you," try this instead: "I can't imagine what this is like for you," followed by "How are you doing?" Everyone's grief is different. Even if you've experienced loss, you don't know how they feel. Let them tell you about it in their own words.
  3. Stay away from offering clichés like, "You were lucky to have the time you had," "She's with the angels now," etc. It doesn't help to have you try to rationalize away someone's grief. If you're not sure what to say, go back to tip #2 above.
  4. "I'd like to help. Would you like me to __________?" Insert specific tasks that you are willing to do that you think might be helpful. You could suggest something like "mow the lawn, walk the dog, watch the baby, sit with you, help you clear the garage," etc. Then show up and do it if the answer is "Yes." Try to avoid the offhand, "Let me know if there is anything I can do for you." No one believes you really mean it and that puts the burden on the griever to think of something for you to do. They don't have the energy for that.
  5. When someone cries in front of you, all you have to do is stay put and say something in a soothing voice like, "It's OK....let that out....I'm here for you." Comforting them with a touch on the arm or a hug is great too. Just do your best to stay present and don't try to "fix" it. Don't hand them a tissue unless they ask for it. The tears will come to a natural completion of their own accord.
  6. Do your best to keep your relationship intact. Avoiding a grieving person because it's uncomfortable for you to be with them is hard for them. You can imagine the feelings of isolation they would be feeling if everyone in their lives reacted this way. It's OK to say the name of the person that is gone. It's OK to ask what happened. It's OK to talk about the strangeness of it all. It's even OK to cry in front of them or with them. Your silence and avoidance is what's really painful.
People experiencing grief crave feeling heard, seen, understood. They need to know that they aren't alone. Know that your love and empathy will go a long way towards supporting a grieving person in their deepest time of need. Know that they would do it for you, too.

Great group at the Belmont Manor's Ghosts of England Lecture

On Tues., Jan. 15, at the Belmont Manor in Elkridge, Maryland, during the Inspired Ghost Tracking series, I gave my lecture on my latest book ,"The Ghosts of England on a Medium's Vacation." It was a good crowd and all had an interest in either British history, haunted castles, or ghosts. All three interests were addressed in full, and there were a lot of great questions.
 - One attendee has the gift of mediumship, another came from England and shared some British experiences, including her stay at Thornbury Castle (part of the book and lecture) where I encountered a ghost in my room!. There was also a veterinarian there, whose female relative came through to me, giving her a confirmation she needed to hear.
My thanks to Margaret Erhlich, Inspired Ghost Tracking founder, who ran the powerpoint presentation and came out even battling Bronchitis. Tom, another IGT medium (who helped write and edit the book) was also there providing a lot of royal British Tudor history.
All in all, a great event.

ABOUT THE BOOK: GHOSTS OF ENGLAND ON A MEDIUM'S VACATION
What happens when a medium goes on vacation? Can a medium simply switch off their ability at will? Well…not exactly. Rob Gutro is a medium/author/paranormal investigator and a scientist who has written 4 books about his encounters with human and animal ghosts and spirits.
Hever Castle's front gate
In this book, you will read about his experiences on two separate trips to the United Kingdom. England’s rich history and many epic battles have caused an over-abundance of residual emotional energy. Everywhere he traveled, he had a paranormal experience. He explored royal palaces and spent the night in haunted castles. He encountered the ghosts of historical figures including a queen, a prince, and a nobleman; and several ghosts even shared their pain of death experience with him.
On one occasion, the doppelganger of a loved one provided directions when he became lost while driving in the countryside due to a malfunctioning GPS. But not all of his encounters were of the human variety: there was also a very special visit from a canine ghost. This book is intended to be more than just a collection of personal ghost stories. In addition to relating my ghostly encounters, he has also included a short narrative history of the places where the experiences occurred. After all, knowing the history of a place is key to understanding why a ghost has decided to stay behind. So, join Rob as he relates his encounters with the ghosts of England.
Rob has written 4 other books about the paranormal, two about people (Ghosts and Spirits and Lessons Learned From Talking to the Dead) and 2 about pets (Pets and the Afterlife and Pets and the Afterlife 2). The books are available in paperback and e-book on Amazon.com.

Part 1: Haunted Devon, UK - Part 1: -Why Devonians think Sir Francis Drake was a wizard

My latest book is called "Ghosts of England on a Medium's Vacation" (by Rob Gutro) and conveys
all of the ghosts I met as I traveled throughout England. There are a LOT more ghosts in England that I  did not (yet) meet, and here is the first of several postings from Devonlive in Devon, U.K about some of them.. - Rob

Did Sir Francis Drake have  mystical powers? Does the pirate of Burgh Island still haunt the place where he was hung on the anniversary of his death? And were pacts made with the devil which have left a Satanic chill hovering over these Devon landmarks to this day?

Why Devonians think Sir Francis Drake was a wizard

Both the Spanish and the British believed that Sir Francis Drake was a wizard who used supernatural methods. The swashbuckling Elizabethan sea hero helped defeat the Spanish Armada apparently against all the odds.

After Drake was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I he took his duties to the people he represented very seriously. One summer during a particularly bad drought it is said that he rode up on to Dartmoor until he found a spring to deliver drinking water to the people of Plymouth.
He is said to have 'bewitched it with magic incantations and then galloped into town with the stream at his heels.

The stream is still visible as Plymouth leat which rises three miles north and Sheepstor and threads it was down into a reservoir to the north of Plymouth.
In places the Devonport Leat appears to travel uphill, which some believed was against the laws of nature.

The leats were designed to carry water, by means of gravity. The art of the leat builders was a skilled job as they had to ensure the flow of water was not too fast so as to flood and not to slow as to stagnate. This was achieved by following the natural contours of the landscape. On the eastern flank of Beardown where the Devonport Leat flows down towards Plymouth, a section appears to flow uphill.
Drake's Leat at Roborough Down
Photo: Drake's Leat at Roborough Down
There are still Devonians who believe the spirit of Drake reincarnates with every successive British naval hero.
Even Drake's drum is supposed to have supernatural powers. Drake took the drum with him when he circumnavigated the world. Shortly before he died he ordered the drum to be taken to Buckland Abbey and vowed that if England were ever in danger and someone was to beat the drum he would return to defend the country. According to legend it can be heard to beat at times when England is at war or significant national events take place.
As recently as World War II the drum was said to bang again although many said it was the sound of Ack Ack antiaircraft guns.

Now owned by the National Trust, Buckland Abbey was once the home of Sir Francis Drake who is now believed to haunt the Abbey.

After returning from his three-year circumvention of the globe, Drake was sold the Abbey in 1580. However the locals believed he possessed supernatural powers granted to him through a pact with the devil.

According to reports, Drake’s ghost is said to travel across Dartmoor in a black coach driven by several headless horses, followed by a pack of howling hounds. It is also believed that any living dog that hears the packs’ cries will die immediately.

This picturesque Yarcombe Inn pub was once owned by Drake and is now said to be haunted by his spirit. The grade II-listed building, on the Devon/Somerset border, dates from the 14th century. Its other claim to notoriety is that Admiral Lord Nelson stayed at the inn when he travelled between Portsmouth and Honiton.

Tarot Tuesday: Queen of Pentacles

Every Tuesday, my friend Joy Andreasen brings us Tarot Tuesday. Today's card is the Queen of Pentacles.

Joy Says: Today is a really good day to own your power and acknowledge your value, especially if you are a woman. You have much to share with the world, and you know it. Your wisdom and insight could benefit you and others, as soon as you own it and claim the recognition you deserve!

ABOUT THE CARD: In the Queen of Pentacles, a woman sits on a stone throne decorated with carvings of fruit trees, goats, angels and other symbols of material success and sensual pleasure. She cradles a gold coin with both hands and looks down on it with loving care, as if to nurture this symbol of wealth and material success. Luscious plants and flowers surround her, representing her connection to Mother Earth, nature, and abundance. A small rabbit jumps near to where she is seated, symbolizing fertility and suggesting that her life is in flow and alignment. Source: Biddytarot.com

Tracking a Ghostly Cat in the Envy Salon, Ellicott City, Md.

Rob encountered a ghost cat that resembled this one
In Historic Ellicott City, Maryland, there's a ghost cat in a salon. In 2017 I got to investigate the Envy Salon where there are 2 benign ghosts. One is a woman, the other a cat.
During my visit there, I did encounter the ghost cat, but the woman named Catherine stayed away. Working with Television Producer Tony Hoos of the Howard County Community College, I was interviewed for a video segment with the manager of the Envy Salon.
This blog features my experience with the ghost cat, some photos and the great video.

ghost cat was sitting here when Rob approached
ROB'S GHOST CAT EXPERIENCE: I'm Rob Gutro, an author of 5 paranormal books including "Pets and the Afterlife" and "Pets and the Afterlife 2" - so I was called in to help explain the ghost cat in the Envy Salon.
When I entered the salon's first floor area I sensed residual energy there. I also sensed a human ghost although I couldn't see one or get an idea of who they were. I later learned that a ghostly woman haunts the first floor, usually after closing time  Apparently, she usually comes out in the evening (and I was there during the daytime). Catherine is thought to be a former resident of the structure when it was a home.
Rob saw the ghost cat scamper here on the 2nd floor

As I walked up the stairs to the second floor, I developed my "ghostly headache." I usually get a headache in the back left part of my head in the presence of an Earthbound ghost or spirit who has crossed over and returned for a visit. At the top of the stairs I saw a small hallway that connected rooms with other hair and nail stations. There was a dresser there with a rectangular carpet in front of it. On that carpet, in front of the dresser sat the ghost cat. As soon
Ghost cat was atop these stairs
as I caught a quick glimpse, it darted into the room to the right and vanished.
As I walked around the upstairs, I caught a second glimpse of a small, dark shadow zipping out of that room where I saw the ghost cat enter. The shadow bolted down the stairway to the first floor, just like a scared cat would do!

WHAT'S IN THE 3 MINUTE VIDEO:  The Video series "A Few Odd Minutes (in Howard County)  published the video about a Ghost Cat at the Envy Salon in Ellicott City, Maryland.  On this episode, we visit a beauty salon with a couple of "permanent" guests. One is a ghost named Catherine and the other is a feline friend that sometimes makes her presence known to the customers. Rob Gutro, author/medium was interviewed about why the cat may linger.
