In the news: Ghosts that 'haunt' the M6 explained as 'most haunted roads in UK' unveiled

In my book "Ghosts of England on a Medium's Vacation" I wrote about the many ghosts I encountered during my two vacations there. One of them was a ghost I saw on the road, and apparently there are many of roadside ghosts. Here's a story from the UK Daily Star in October 2020 about one of those road ghosts:

UK Daily Star (click for link)

The M6 is not just the longest road in the UK – it is purportedly the most haunted too. And a spiritual expert has explained why he thinks Roman soldiers and UK based armies could be the reason behind ghostly sightings and unusual crashes.

Motorists travelling on the M6 have claimed to see ancient soldiers cross their paths, spectres glare at them from bushes, and witness other ghostly goings on along the 232 mile long M6.

One stretch of the road is said to date back 2,000 years to when Roman’s occupied England, while parts of the M6 are also believed to have been the battleground for violent clashes between Scottish and English armies in times of old.

Internationally renowned psychic, Mike Brooker, nicknamed J16-19 as “Cheshire's Bermuda Triangle” while talking to Cheshire Live as he reviewed the unusually high number of car accidents not he motorway.

He said: “I personally know people who have lost their lives and families who have been affected by accidents on this stretch of motorway."

"I am leaning towards the theory that it can be connected to Saxon involvement. There are reports of a Roman burial ground and that there was an historic clash between Scottish and English armies. There are so many variables and possibilities."

“For decades now, the amount of accidents on the M6 motorway between junctions 17 and 19 is completely unprecedented and, statistically, this is without doubt one of the worst ‘accident black-spots’ on any motorway network in the UK."

He continued: "There appear to be two principal answers that come up, one is that the motorway was built on a Roman burial site and the other, is that it was the site of the slaughter of a number of the Scottish army dating back over 200 years."

Ghosts of England: On a Medium's Vacation

What happens when a medium goes on vacation? Can a medium simply switch off their ability at will? Well…not exactly. Rob Gutro is a medium/author/paranormal investigator and a scientist who has written 4 books about his encounters with human and animal ghosts and spirits. In this book, you will read about his experiences on two separate trips to the United Kingdom. England’s rich history and many epic battles have caused an over-abundance of residual emotional energy. Everywhere he traveled, he had a paranormal experience. He explored royal palaces and spent the night in haunted castles. He encountered the ghosts of historical figures including a queen, a prince, and a nobleman; and several ghosts even shared their pain of death experience with him.

Haunted U.K.: Glamis Castle, Scotland

The United Kingdom has some of the most haunted sites. National Geographic published an article highlighting some of them and this is one in that series.   I encountered many ghosts in England, too, and you can read about them in my book "Ghosts of England on a Medium's Vacation," available on Amazon.  Here's this week's UK haunting:

(Photo: Glamis Castle, Scotland. Credit: Home and Garden)

Glamis Castle, Angus, Scotland
This idyllic country castle — the childhood home of the Queen Mother — is the source of numerous supernatural legends. There’ve been sightings of countless ghosts, including that of a woman whose tongue was cut off by an earl who wanted to silence her.

The most remarkable story of all, though, concerns the Monster of Glamis (pronounced 'Glarms', by the way). Rumour has it that the heir born to Thomas Bowes-Lyon in 1821 was so unspeakably hideous that he was banished to a secret chamber, never to be seen again. What really happened to the child is a mystery, but subsequent guests — including poet and novelist Sir Walter Scott in 1830 — reported spending an ‘eerie’ night within the castle walls.

The United Kingdom's Haunted "Ostrich" Inn

There are a lot of haunted places in the United Kingdom. I also had the pleasure of visiting England and you can read about my encounters with the ghosts there in my book "Ghosts of England on a Medium's Vacation," available on Amazon.   GetReadingUK on-line spotlighted a couple of haunted places I didn't get to, though, and here's one of them:

The Ostrich

The Ostrich Inn

The inn on High Street in Slough was only recently renovated, but the ghoulish history lives on.

The 12th-century inn is regularly attended by drinkers and diners, but they’re not the only ones.

More than 60 people have been reportedly killed in the inn, many of whom were slaughtered in their sleep by former inn keeper Jarman and his wife in the 17th century.

It is said that the murderous couple put trap doors in the floor boards and tipped rich guests into a vat of boiling liquid while they slept.

Jarman and his wife would then steal their money and sell their horses.

The murderous couple were eventually hung for robbery and murder, but that hasn’t stopped them visiting. Employees and visitors have reported sudden temperature drops, strange noises, voices and even sightings of ghostly figures.

Guests have reported numerous sightings of ghostly fingers on the top floor of the inn.

Royal Ghost Stories: Anne Boleyn

In my book "Ghosts of England on a Medium's Vacation" I wrote about my encounter with the ghost of Anne Boleyn, one of Henry VIII's wives in the Tower of London. Recently, Royal Central UK did a story about others who met Anne's ghost in the very same place, Here's the story (and a link follows to my book about my encounter with Anne and many other ghosts of England>>>

25th October 2020

King Henry VIII’s second wife, Anne Boleyn. The former queen – who was also the mother of Queen Elizabeth I – was accused of adultery and beheaded at the Tower of London on 19 May 1536. She is said to be buried at the church of St Peter Ad Vincula within the Tower’s walls.

Since her death almost 500 years ago, there have been countless reports of ghostly activity at several homes and palaces associated with Anne Boleyn, many of which have been attributed to re-appearances of the former queen.

A famous example was in 1864 when Captain J. D. Dundas was living in the Tower of London. The story goes that one day he looked out of the window and noticed a Yeoman Warder acting strangely whilst standing in the courtyard where Anne Boleyn had been beheaded. He appeared to challenge something, which Dundas said: “Looked like a whitish, female figure sliding towards the soldier”. The guard charged through the form with his bayonet, then fainted. He was only saved from a prison sentence because Dundas testified as a witness at his court-martial.

Another sighting at the tower occurred within Anne’s final resting place of the church of St Peter Ad Vincula. The guard on duty said that he saw a “flickering light inside late one night”. Plagued by curiosity, the Captain of the Guard climbed a ladder to see inside. He recalled seeing a procession of Ladies and Knights in Tudor-style dress – led by Anne Boleyn – parading down the aisle of the chapel. He vividly remembered the former queen stopping by her grave in front of the altar before disappearing.

The Tower of London is not the only place where Anne’s ghost has been spotted. In what sounds like something straight out of horror film, an apparition of her headless body has been seen numerous times at Windsor Castle, running through the halls in the Dean’s Cloister whilst clutching her severed, screaming head.

UK Hauntings: The ghost of Thornton's in Chester

In the town of Chester, United Kingdom, there's a chocolate store called Thornton's that has a resident ghost. The store chain announced this past March that it would be closing all of their stores this year, but one in particular will apparently be opened all the time, at least for the ghost who lives in it.  If you're interested in other Ghosts in England, check out my book about MY experiences when I went on vacation there - it's called "Ghosts of England on a Medium's Vacation."  Here's the story about the Chester ghost from Chester Live UK on March 23, 2021 (click for link)

(Photo: Thornton's in Chester, UK. Credit: Chester live.UK)

The ghost of Thornton's in Chester

A soon-to-be-closed chocolate store in Chester is said to be haunted by a mysterious ghost. It was announced recently that Thorntons will be closing all 61 of its stores in the UK.

The closures will see both the Cheshire Oaks store and Eastgate Street store in Chester close their doors to customers.

However, what many people don't know is that the site of the Eastgate Street store is the location of an eerie tale.

Folklore says that Sarah, a young lady living on Eastgate Street in the late 18th or early 19th century, fell in love with a man called Wilhelm who ended up jilting her on their wedding day.

Sarah was said to be so devastated at being jilted that she returned to her home and hung herself, causing havoc on the premises ever since.

She has never been physically seen, but it is said she has made her presence very much known over the years.

According to an article called Parascience, chronicling the ghosts of Chester, one of the shop's managers once experienced 'a possession' when staff spotted her coming down the stairs singing an unknown song and holding her hands out as if lifting a long and heavy dress in order to descend the stairs.

The manager can offer no explanation for this, but other strange things continued to occur.

Shortly after this incident, an American tourist who dismissed the stories as 'rubbish,' was immediately pushed down the stairs by an 'invisible hand.'

Then an electrician who went to read the meter in the cellar was not down there for long before he ran back up the stairs.

Royal Ghosts: Windsor Castle - home to numerous sightings

Queen Elizabeth 1 said to haunt Windsor Castle.
During the 2020 pandemic an article came out speculating that some of the royal family may have more ghost sightings in Windsor Castle. Apparently Windsor Castle is known to harbor several ghosts of royalty. I also had the pleasure of visiting England and you can read about my encounters with the ghosts there in my book "Ghosts of England on a Medium's Vacation," available on Amazon.  Here's the article.

By GURSIMRAN HANS https://www.express.co.uk/news/weird/1286087/Queen-news-Prince-Philip-Windsor-Castle-ghosts-Princess-Maragret-history-weird PUBLISHED: 05:02, Sat, May 23, 2020

If legends are to be believed, the Royal Family in England were joined by one of 25 ghosts reported as having been seen at the property. The Queen herself once claimed to have seen an apparition of Queen Elizabeth I with her sister Princess Margaret, the Countess of Snowdon.

According to Visit Britain, Elizabeth I is “often seen in the library” and “her footsteps can be heard on the bare floorboards before her striking presence appears”. Elizabeth I ruled from 1558 until 1603 and having died childless was the last monarch of the Tudor era.

King George III has been reported to have been seen too. According to the Sun, he has been spotted “looking longingly out of the room beneath the library, where he was confined during his several periods of madness”. George III would spend the end of his life fighting some form of mental illness, the cause of which remains unknown. Much of his reign was also dominated by military accomplishments - victory in the Seven Years’ and Napoleonic Wars but also defeat in the American War of Independence. His son, the later King George IV ruled for the last decade of his father’s reign as regent.

King Henry III and Herne, a huntsman for King Richard III have also been said to have been spotted. Henry III became King of England aged just nine and ruled until the age of 65. He was buried in Westminster Abbey, which he had built during a reign in which he had to contend with sometimes hostile barons.

According to Readers’ Digest, King George VI claimed to have seen the ghost of Queen Elizabeth I eight nights in a row on the onset of the Second World War.

Video: Ghostly Doorway at Thornbury Castle from my book 'Ghosts of England"

In my book Ghosts of England on a Medium's Vacation by Rob Gutro, I stayed at Thornbury Castle and there were several ghosts there! This is a look at the outside of giant wooden door to my bedroom- where I captured a photo of the ghost's orb (a rounded, multicolored ball of energy- a ghost in it's most simple form). I got the name of the ghost, and he gave me clues to his identity... which I figured out when I returned from vacation. Even the reason why he stayed behind and why in the castle. It's all in my book "Ghosts of England on a Medium's Vacation. "

ABOUT THORNBURY CASTLE: Thornbury Castle is a castle in Thornbury, South Gloucestershire, England. This is short video scan of the outside of the castle. Inside, there was a ghost in the room where I stayed, and there was a ghost in the main section of the upstairs hallway. You''ll find both of those stories in my book "Ghosts of England on a Medium's Vacation" by Rob Gutro Construction began in 1511 as a home for Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham. It is not a true castle (designed to serve as a fortress), but rather an early example of a Tudor country house, with minimal defensive attributes. It is now a grade I listed building. The site was occupied by a manor house in 930. Part of the original plans for a very grand residence were "well advanced" before the duke was beheaded, in 1521, on the orders of his distant cousin Henry VIII, for alleged treason.

The Thatch Tavern Ghost Whom I thought was Alive! - Read: Ghosts of England on a Medium's Vacation

In my book "Ghosts of England on a Medium's Vacation" I met a lot of ghosts from a lot of different time periods in England. They were all from different professions and walks of life. They included 2 queens, merchants, a waitress, ghostly monks, and members of the royal court to name a few..

Here's a short video of a ghost I encountered at the Old Thatch Tavern in the town of Stratford Upon Avon. It took me by surprise, because I thought she was a living person!

You can read more in my book and see the sketch I made of her.

Email Q&A About How I Planned my Trip in "Ghosts of England on a Medium's Vacation"

One of my favorite books that I've written is "Ghosts of England on a Medium's Vacation." It contains all of my unexpected paranormal experiences when I twice visited the country. Recently, JC asked me a good question about planning the trip, and whether I decided to stay open to ghosts on the trip.  Here's his email and my response>>

QUESTION:   JC said, In addition to your pets books and the reading on Winnie, I recently completed your Ghosts of England and enjoyed it tremendously. My question is did you decide before you went that you would stay open to paranormal experiences or do you not have control over the situations?

I would think that would be exhausting. Either way the book was an enjoyable read. I just know from visiting several of the same places if I were being contacted by spirits and or ghosts all the time, it would eventually tire me and discourage my traveling.

MY ANSWER:   Tom actually worked with  Anne Marie of Across the Pond Vacations to plan out our 2 trips to England. Being an amateur historian on the Tudor period, he provided Anne Marie with a number of places to visit, and she coordinated things around them.

Good question about deciding before. My answer is "no." I didn't even think of the paranormal when the trip was being planned. In fact, I had never been to England before and was focusing on the excitement of finally being in a European country (previously I had only been to Mexico and Canada).

Usually wherever I've gone in the U.S., I've been able to mostly blunt the communications from ghosts, but England was overloaded with them, all of whom  wanted to tell their stories or reach out.  Since they were from different times in history, they actually added to the history of the trip, so it wasn't a bad thing.  It was kind of like being on a tour group where a lot of people want to talk to you, but these people were actually conveying history. :)  So I looked at it as a double-benefit.

Best-ever Travel Service to the U.K. - Who Inspired my Book: Ghosts of England on a Medium's Vacation

Now that vaccines are being distributed around the world, and travel in 2021 looks promising, I wanted to tell you to plan now. I took 3 trips through Across the Pond Vacations to England, Scotland and Ireland, and they not only were the greatest vacations of my life, but I ran into many ghosts and wrote about them in "Ghosts of England on a Medium's Vacation," a popular paranormal book on Amazon.  If you want to visit the U.K., you need to plan now. Here is my experience and recommendation:

I think it takes about 6 months to organize the greatest vacations, just as it does to anything that will be awesome. That way, when you work with a professional on organizing a trip, you have time to go back and forth, modify things to your liking and make it perfect. We did that with the BEST-EVER U.S. travel service to the United Kingdom, Across the Pond Vacations in California. Here's a summary of my 5 of 5 star experiences:

Three of the most memorable and thoroughly enjoyable vacations we have ever had in our lives were organized by Across the Pond Vacations out of Torrance, Calif.

Anne Marie and Simon who own and manage the business. were a pleasure to work with, easy-going and provided the best suggestions of places to visit.  It's all about planning.

We contacted them 6 months ahead of our trips and gave them some highlights we wanted to visit in 1 trip to England, 1 trip to both England and Scotland and 1 trip to Ireland. During that time, they organized personal tours (historical and haunted), found a Tudor castle for us to stay in (which was amazing!),  found the BEST B&Bs and hotels;; and coordinated transportation in the U.K. and Ireland.

They presented options and without hesitation, modified things based on our preferences. Planning a comprehensive trip overseas requires time and all 3 trips we super-organized. We had a binder complete with schedules, maps, tickets, and tips on food, tipping, transportation, etc.  The organization was something that was unprecedented by any travel service we've ever used.  We will be returning the U.K. and Across the Pond will always be our first stop. They are the "Rock of Cashel" when it comes to traveling to the United Kingdom.

Short Video Tour of Sudeley Castle's Gardens - from my book 'Ghosts of England"

In my book Ghosts of England on a Medium's Vacation by Rob Gutro, I toured the famous Sudeley Castle and talked about the ghost that haunts the castle. Also impressive about Sudeley were the magnificent gardens that surrounded it. So, in this short video, I'll take you on a tour of them!

You can read about the Ghost at Sudeley Castle in Chapter 19 of the book. Sudeley Castle was the estate of Queen Katherine Parr, the last surviving wife of Henry VIII. There is one reputed ghost who haunts the castle, and there's a very strange story about her burial that would explain why she's not at peace. It's all in my book "Ghosts of England on a Medium's Vacation.

Video: Feeling of Dread in the Tower Of London from my book 'Ghosts of England"

In my book Ghosts of England on a Medium's Vacation by Rob Gutro, I toured the famous "Tower of London," and ran into quite a few GHOSTS, and a portal, or energy doorway used by ghosts., In this particular video, I had just come out of St. Peter's Church and it was quite unsettling with the residual emotional energy within. That's because of the horror people learned in that church. It's all in my book "Ghosts of England on a Medium's Vacation. "

ABOUT THE TOWER OF LONDON-  When William the Conqueror built a mighty stone tower at the centre of his London fortress in the 1070s, defeated Londoners must have looked on in awe. Now nearly 1000 years later, the Tower still has the capacity to fascinate and horrify.
As protector of the Crown Jewels, home of the Yeomen Warders and its legendary guardians, the pampered ravens, the Tower now attracts over three million visitors a year. Here, the Ceremony of the Keys and other traditions live on, as do the ghost stories and terrible tales of torture and execution.
But the Tower also has a richer and more complex history, having been home to a wide array of institutions including the Royal Mint, the Royal Armouries and even a zoo.

After all, knowing the history of a place is key to understanding why a ghost has decided to stay behind. So, join Rob as he relates his encounters with the ghosts of England.

ABOUT "GHOSTS OF ENGLAND ON A MEDIUM'S VACATION by Rob Gutro:
On one occasion, the doppelganger of a loved one provided directions when he became lost while driving in the countryside due to a malfunctioning GPS. But not all of his encounters were of the human variety: there was also a very special visit from a canine ghost. This book is intended to be more than just a collection of personal ghost stories.

Video: A Look at the Unfinished Part of Thornbury Castle (from my Ghosts of England book adventure)

In my book  Ghosts of England on a Medium's Vacation  by Rob Gutro,

I stayed at Thornbury Castle and there were several ghosts there!  This is a look at the part of the castle that was never finished (although it looks like it's in ruins, it isn't because construction halted when the owner died) thanks to Henry VIII.
