Happy Halloween! Learn about the U.S. Capitol’s ‘Demon Cat’

The city of Washington, DC is a very haunted place. I know personally because I'm a medium, and I live close enough to it, that I've visited the city many times and run into some ghosts. But I haven't run into the ghost cat at the U.S. Capitol.

Why the U.S. Capitol’s ‘Demon Cat’ Legend Is So Persistent A lot of it has to do with paw prints.

BY ERIC GRUNDHAUSERAtlas Obscura

OVER THE LAST TWO CENTURIES, the U.S. Capitol Building, with its underground passages and echoing side chambers, has amassed its fair share of ghost stories. Whether it’s the specter of a lost Civil War soldier from the building’s brief stint as a wartime hospital, or the ghost of John Quincy Adams shouting his final words in the Speaker’s Lobby, the Capitol Building is a ghost hunter’s dream. But few such stories have captured the public’s imagination like that of the Demon Cat.

“It’s probably the most common of all the ghost stories in the capitol. Partly because of the physical evidence,” says Steve Livengood, the chief tour guide of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society.

Tales of a spectral feline known as the “Demon Cat” (initials “D.C.,” get it?!) date back to at least the 19th century. Since joining the USCHS in 1973, Livengood has become an expert on the tale.

“The story probably goes back to the post–Civil War era. The main thing is that the people who would see it particularly were the night watchmen,” says Livengood. The most common version of the legend goes that a guard was on patrol one night when he saw a black cat approaching. In those days, cats were not an uncommon sight in the building, introduced to control the rodent population. However as the cat came closer, it grew in size until it was as large as a tiger. The monster cat pounced on the guard, who fell down and tried to protect himself, but the creature vanished in mid-air.

01:05 / 05:56 Like most ghost stories, tales of the Demon Cat have a number of variations. Later sightings are said to have scared people to death. The cat’s appearances have also been linked to national tragedies and presidential transitions.

What’s kept the legend alive all this time? A couple of features in the Capitol Building are said to be evidence of the Demon Cat’s existence. The most famous of these is a group of shallow paw prints in the concrete of the Small Senate Rotunda. In 1898, the Capitol Building was damaged by a gas explosion, and according to Livengood, in some spots the original stone was replaced by concrete. “It’s quite possible that a cat walked across the wet concrete,” he says. “Just enough to leave some impressions. It’s as you come out of the Old Supreme Court Chamber. There may be six or eight pretty clear ones.” In another part of the building, Livengood also notes that the letters “DC” have been scratched into the concrete. “Everyone says, ‘That’s the Demon Cat putting its initials there!’”

As much fun as it is to believe that there’s a monster cat prowling the midnight halls of the U.S. Capitol, Livengood isn’t having it. “I can put enough pieces together to know where the legend came from,” he says. “The night watchmen were not professionals. They would often be some senator’s ne’er-do-well brother-in-law that had a drinking problem.”

Livengood’s theory is these early Capitol guards would often get so drunk they’d fall down, so when one of the building’s cats came and licked their face, they assumed it must have been monster-sized. But when the guard in question reported their ravings to a superior, the boss couldn’t really discipline him for drinking because of his high-powered connections, so the guard would simply have been sent home to recover. “Then the other guards realize that if they see the cat and get attacked, then they get a day off. And that’s how history gets written,” says Livengood.

Livengood says that while he regularly gets asked about the Demon Cat, or sees visitors using their cell phones to illuminate the faint paw prints in the Small Senate Rotunda, he’s never heard of a modern sighting of the creature. “I’ve never had anyone who felt they had an experience like that,” he says.

Still, Livengood sees ghost stories as an important part of the building’s history. “They humanize the building,” he says. “One of the things I try to get across to people as I’m giving a tour is that the spirit of the people who built the building and the people who have acted out history in it are still there. And you can feel it.”

A Fun Halloween Lecture at the Strathmore Mansion

On October 27, I returned to the historic Strathmore Mansion in Bethesda, Maryland to give my annual Halloween lecture. This is my fourth year, and every year I come up with a different paranormal topic. As a medium, author of 8 books, and a paranormal investigator, there's a lot to talk about.  If you haven't experienced this and you live in the Washington, DC Metro area, sign up for it in 2022 to get "in the Spirit." Here's the story:

The Strathmore has a wonderful English tea with small sandwiches and desserts and is staffed by wonderful volunteers. The event opens with music by local artists. This year, there was a flutist and a pianist and they played many spooky favorites, including the theme from the Addams Family Television show and films. I highly recommend their English Tea events!

This year, I cited stories from my new book, Ghosts and Spirits: Explained. I told the story of how after my dad passed away, he helped me prove to my mom and brothers that his spirit was at his own services!  I also told the story of when I wound up living in a haunted house in the 1990s...

The room was filled and there were a lot of great questions. In addition to the interactions with the crowd, some highlights included my friends Lynn and Janet in attendance and seeing my friend Mary who manages the Strathmore.

In the News: This 600 Year-old Airbnb Apartment In UK Comes With A Warning Of 'ghosts'

Here's an interesting story of an Air B and B if you're seeking to stay in a haunted place. Count me OUT. As a medium, I couldn't get any rest with ghosts keeping me awake. But for those of you who are not mediums, you may want to check it out. Here's the article

This 600 Year-old Airbnb Apartment In the United Kingdom Comes With A Warning Of 'ghosts'

The 600-years-old Airbnb apartment that is built on the ruins of the first norman house reportedly has had spooky experiences in the past.

York has an image of being a haunted city in the UK and is home to a spooky Airbnb rental apartment. It goes by the name of Trembling Madness Apartment which was built on the ruins of the first Norman house in 1180 AD. The apartment caters to the stay of four people and comes with a king-sized bed and a double sofa-bed.

York's haunted image comes from its history of tragedy, torture, poverty and mass murders. After more than 500 haunted incidents were reported in the city, the International Ghost Research Foundation declared York as the most haunted city in Europe. Even though nothing serious has ever happened in the rental apartment, previous customers have reported instances where they heard weird noises from around the house while laying on the bed.

The feedbacks are not negative as most people say that the apartment's location is perfect to travel in and around the city and it is right next to major pubs in York. The apartment comes with all the facilities of the modern hotel room such as a refrigerator, an oven and high-speed internet. The ambience makes the room quirky but in a good way.

The charge for the apartments is fixed at 98 pounds per night and is one of the most elite accommodations available in the city. The customer reviews on Airbnb’s site shed light on the guests’ experiences in the past. One review said, "Had a lovely stay at the Haunted Chamber. It’s a fantastic, quirky apartment in a superb location- well worth the spooky noises at 3 am." Another reviewer said, “Quirky and interesting apartment, not for the faint-hearted as it is pretty spooky! The location was perfect and made getting round the city so easy.”

The city was founded by Romans and has seen an array of wars over the years. The Battle of Towton was fought in 1461 and is said to be the bloodiest and the most brutal war in the history of England. Anyone with some knowledge of history must already be aware of the importance of the town and it may not even come as a surprise that the horrors of the previous wars are still looming large over the walls of the ancient city.

IF YOU WANT TO READ ABOUT MORE HAUNTED PLACES IN THE UK, check out my book on Amazon.com called "Ghosts of England on a Medium's Vacation." I write about the MANY ghosts I met on 2 visits there.

Encounter the Alleyway Ghosts and Others in a book "Case Files of Inspired Ghost Tracking"

A book called "Case Files of Inspired Ghost Tracking," by best-selling paranormal author Rob Gutro takes readers on paranormal investigations into private and historic homes where ghosts were traumatizing families.
You'll read about the Alleyway Ghost in the pages of Case Files. You'll learn why he's there and why he died there, just as we did when the paranormal investigators met him in the alleyway behind a house in the Baltimore area. Rob even sketched him out and got confirmation from the homeowner that that was indeed the ghost they saw walking around in their house!
Rob, a medium in the Inspired Ghost Tracking paranormal group, announced the release of his seventh paranormal book that brings readers along on investigations and reveals some bizarre and shocking things the group found and how they helped the ghosts and families.

"When earthbound ghosts have traumatized families in their own homes, Inspired Ghost Tracking (IGT) of Maryland has gone in to cross them over," Gutro said. "Every case is different, too. Some have had earthbound ghosts that were friendly, others were not. IGT experienced a lot of bad energies that caused people to become physically sick or mentally traumatized. IGT investigators had to figure who, what, when and why things were happening, to finally bring peace to the living and the dead."

In this collection of IGT cases, you’ll read about the "Burned Ghost," ghosts of two different time periods in one home, dark things that Ouija boards brought into homes, a very haunted Maryland mansion, many ghosts of Baltimore’s Federal Hill, a ghostly attachment, a Steelworker’s ghost, poltergeist activity, the famous IGT “Double Murder Ghost Investigation” and many more.

You'll find answers to questions like why ghosts choose to stay in a place, the differences and similarities between ghosts and spirits, why energy is the key to the paranormal and much more.

Although Rob has become known as a "Pet Medium" through the success of his best-selling books "Pets and the Afterlife" and "Pets and the Afterlife 2," he also connects with human earthbound ghosts and spirits.

Gutro is the first in the paranormal field to make the distinction between earthbound ghosts and spirits who have crossed over. Rob has three books about his experience with human ghosts and spirits, called "Ghosts and Spirits," "Lessons Learned from Talking to the Dead," and "Ghosts of England on a Medium's Vacation," and most recently, "Kindred Spirits: How a Medium Befriended a Spirit."

Rob Gutro has been featured in the Washington Post and nationally syndicated radio programs like "Coast to Coast AM." Rob is a volunteer with Dachshund and Weimaraner rescues and gives fundraising lectures for animal rescues around the U.S., teaching grieving pet parents how pets communicate from the afterlife.

Q&A; Do Multiple Ghosts Interact? What about from Different Time Periods?

Here are some great questions from Chris W. about ghosts and interactions with other ghosts. I've provided my answers below, based on my experiences.

1) Are ghosts aware of one another? Do you think they can interact with one another? or do you believe that the ghosts are mostly operating on their own layer of time (mostly anyway) and ignore ghosts from other time periods?

A: I think they may be aware of each other, but in my experience, if there were more than one they don't tend to interact. Otherwise, I think we'd have ghostly team-ups, and that doesn't happen. It's always one ghost from one time period doing the talking.
I get the sense that when someone is a ghost they are fixated on getting the attention of the living to help set them free from their earthly prison, and don't bother with the other ghosts. It's somewhat of a selfish thing.

2) Do Ghosts from Different time periods interact with each other?
A:  When I visited England, I encountered ghosts from different time periods in one place - Westminster Abbey.  One was apparently the ghost of a king, another the ghost of a monk, and the third, the ghost of Ann of Cleves (One of Henry VIII's wives) who actually pulled my hair in front of her tomb. I didn't encounter these ghosts at the same time, and none of them seemed to be aware of the other or interact with each other. All had died in different time periods, the monk being the oldest, a few centuries before Ann of Cleves. So, that told me they either don't see each other or don't bother with each other out of their own time periods.

3) Do Ghosts from the Same Time Period Interact?
I believe ghosts from the same time period do interact.  For example, in the "Double Murder Ghost Investigation" I participated in, there were two women who were brutally murdered in the same home. When I went there with another medium from Inspired Ghost Tracking, the ghosts of the women would talk with both myself and the other medium, so I know they were aware of each other and interacting with each other to convey their whole story.
