How I Distinguish Ghosts from Spirits

    As a medium and a paranormal investigator I've read a LOT of books about ghosts and ghost investigations as well as getting in touch with loved ones on the other side. In all of the books I've read,none of them distinguish the energies between ghosts and spirits. I've given them individual definitions, however, because although they are similar, they're also different!
   Most in the paranormal community call entities ghosts or spirits and use the words to mean the same thing. But they are not.  I felt it important to make a distinction between the two, because one lives on Earth and the other lives in the afterlife/heaven/valhalla, etc. So ,I call Earth-bound energies "ghosts," and those who have crossed into the light, "spirits."

  Both are beings of energy and personality, but ghosts choose to stay here on Earth or get stuck here for some reason (which I explain in my books  Ghosts and Spirits: Insights from a Medium,    Lessons Learned from Talking to the Dead, Pets and the Afterlife and Pets and the Afterlife 2.

GHOSTS VS. SPIRITS 
   Ghosts are all about "location, location, location." They inhabit places they enjoyed during life on Earth, or they're stuck in a place where they died (like a prison or a car accident site).

   Spirits on the other hand have joined the energy of the cosmos, or Heaven, or into the light - call it what you will.
THE ENERGY DIFFERENCES AND SIMILARITIES 

   Both draw on physical energies and emotional energies. Ghosts emit negative energy, and are fueled by physical energy as well as negative emotional energy, like fear and anxiety. Spirits, however, are full of positive energy, and are fueled by positive emotions like love, faith and hope as well as physical energy. I explain those in detail in my books as well. One thing that spirits can't do that ghosts can, is that spirits can appear in your dreams. That's how you know they've crossed over.

A Spirit Sends a Butterfly

Butterflies can be signs from spirit

Spirits can manipulate living things in nature, including butterflies and birds. That was part of a talk I gave at the Belmont Manor in Elkridge, Maryland on February 8th called "Signs from spirit in the Afterlife."

DON'T TAKE IT TO EXTREMES 
It doesn't mean that every time you see a butterfly it's a spirit. That's ridiculous. So, how do you know?  Well, if you're thinking about the person at the time a butterfly appears, and the butterfly lingers and acts oddly. Butterflies usually flit quickly away from people and animals. So, if the butterfly lingers, it's very likely a sign from a loved one.

A WOMAN'S EXPERIENCE  
During the talk, a woman explained that her fiancee passed away.She was thinking of him when she went to the back door of her home to let their dog out into the yard. She said that when she stepped outside, a butterfly appeared around her and circled around her. The butterfly stayed around her for quite a long time so she knew it was her fiancee's spirit giving her reassurance that he was still with her.
  

TIMING - If you're thinking of a loved one when some animal or insect around you behaves oddly, it's likely a sign. Spirits often send us signs around birthdays, anniversaries and holidays, so if it happens around one of those times, it's also likely a sign.

Seeing a Visible Spirit!

A man's grandfather appeared in uniform and in color

At one of my talks at the Belmont Manor in Elkridge, Md. on February 8th I gave a talk called "Signs from Loved Ones in the Afterlife." During the talk, a man about 30 years old, told of seeing his late grandfather appear before him In full color wearing military uniform.
   His grandfather was proud of his service in the military, so the man knew it was his grandfather.

QUESTIONING THE APPEARANCE -  It's normal for us to question the appearance of a spirit. After the man told his story has asked if he could have imagined it. As adults, we always question paranormal events or signs from spirit because we are taught to seek a physical explanation. Our logical minds look for a reason. The man wondered if he was hallucinating.  I assured him that he was not and it was a visit.

UNUSUAL TO SEE FULL-COLOR APPEARANCES - It's not common to see a full body, full-color apparition of a spirit (or even an Earthbound ghost) because it takes a LOT of energy to manifest. In this man's case, the spirit drew on the energy of love that they shared .

ENERGY- As I explain in my books "Ghosts and Spirits" and "Lessons Learned from Talking to the Dead" there are physical and emotional energies that empower spirits (who have crossed over) and Earthbound ghosts to get strong enough to manifest. So, this man's spirit was obviously drawing on the love he had for his granddad.

A Ghost I Met at Sands House, Annapolis,Md.

During a recent historic Annapolis Ghost Walk in Maryland I got to visit the historic Sands House for the first time ever! It's a 300 year old house that was opened to the public for the first time, and we didn't expect to run into a ghost, but I got his name and more! 

"A Special Historic Haunting tour of Annapolis" was put on by Watermark and Historic Annapolis. It included a rare tour of the historic Sands House.

WHAT IS THE SANDS HOUSE? - It was a private residence for three centuries and is considered the oldest frame house in Annapolis. It is located at 130 Prince Georges Street and was built around 1700. It was named for John Sands who bought the house in 1771 and seven generations of his family lived there. 

OLDER FINDS BENEATH THE HOUSE - During a 1988 renovation, archaeologists who were working beneath the house found evidence of an older house from the 1600s! A number of Colonial artifacts were found including pipe stems, pins, a flintlock, coin, toothbrush and thimbles.  Even further were marks of a structure by Native Americans about 1,600 years ago!  Native American pottery was also found under the house.  

THE GHOST REVEALS HIMSELF TO ROB!  Once we entered the Sands house, we turned and entered the first room on right. It was dimly lit with only a dozen or so candles. As we walked in, I looked to the back of the room and I saw a dark horizontal long box about 6 feet long. I wondered if that was a table or some weird piece of furniture.  Once everyone got into the room I looked again, and there was nothing there! The long black box had disappeared and there was nothing but a solid wall.  It was then that the guide said "This is the room the family would bring in coffins and have viewings." I thought "Oh my gosh!  I was sensing residual energy from wakes that happened in this room!"

  Immediately after I realized that, I heard the voice of a male ghost shout "I am James Allen!" I felt nervousness and anxiety in that room. I realized that James Allen, whomever he is, was making me feel those emotions. I assume that "Allen" is either his surname or his middle name and he was part of the Sands family. I didn't get any more information, because the tour guide took us into the adjoining room. 

GHOSTLY PAIN -  In that next room, I was walloped with physical pain from a ghost. I'm unsure if it was from James Allen or someone else that was haunting the Sands House. As soon as I walked over the threshold of that room to the left of the front door, I experienced severe pain in my right shoulder, so intense that it actually made me bend over toward the right (the pain was in the right shoulder). Apparently, a ghost was sharing the pain he experienced before he died.  I was unable to get information from the ghost because, once again, we were ushered out of the room (it was a quick 6 minute tour).

How 1 Sign Confirms a Spirit's Presence: Checkered Pattern

Mediumship is a puzzle that we have to solve, and as a medium whenever I get messages from people
or pets in spirit, they're snippets, that turn our to have intensely personal meaning. That meaning helps confirm the spirit's identity. Recently, I was able to connect to the spirit of a young man who passed almost 20 years ago through a "checkered pattern."

I received an email from a woman I'll call  "M," who wrote me about one of her pets in spirit. She also mentioned a friend who passed in 1998 at the end of her email, and that friend came through to me loud and clear with a sign to let M know he's still very much around her.

M said: Thank you for your books and all the stories you tell via FB and your website, indeed I look forward to reading the “Old Souls” book you recommended. But I have to admit to shying away from thinking about human spirits – though Monty’s shockingly sudden demise makes me think often of a close friend, Steve, who was struck down in a similar shockingly fast way in the late 90’s at the age of 34. He tragically contracted AIDS, which gave him 3 different kinds of cancer to contend with, which proves, I guess, how unfair life can be as he was the most beautiful person you could ever wish to meet…Many, many thanks again. 

After reading M's email, Steve came through to me and I had to write back: 
I'm so sorry to learn about your friend  Steve. Yes, the 1990s were a tragic and difficult time with AIDS. As a married, gay man, myself, I remember those times clearly and heard of many people passing from the horrors of the disease.  Steve is healed, happy and smiling in spirit and I literally just saw him walk over to Monty, crouch down and rub his hand over Monty's head, causing Monty's ears to go sideways as he purred. Steve is showing me something with a checkered pattern on it, like a checkerboard or table cloth. He said that when you see something with that pattern, you'll know he's around you. He has never forgotten the tenderness and compassion you showed for him as he faced his last time in the physical world.  

M wrote me back: That is absolutely amazing, I knew immediately when you said checkered pattern, that was the shirt Steve was wearing the last time I saw him, when I took him home for the weekend from the hospital.

M sent me a photo of Steve in that checkered shirt on the last day she saw him and it literally made me tear up. Almost 20 years later, spirits prove to us that they're still around us, still caring for us from the other side, and will all be waiting for us. - Rob

Chica Shares Pain Associated with Passing to Prove Identity

One of the ways in which pets, like people can prove who they are from the other side is to make mediums like me experience the pain they felt before they passed. Often, whenever I read an email I'm able to connect to the energy and get messages from the person or pet who passed. In the following excerpts from a recent email exchange, a dog identified the exact "pain spot" on me as I got messages.
  The writer was also able to identify signs from her dog (over a couple of emails). In this blog, though, I'll show you exactly how specific a dog's sign can be to prove their identity. 

The ORIGINAL EMAIL: Hi Rob, My good friend lost her Chica yesterday after a very sudden onset neurological type (head) event. We are in shock, she had no indication that anything like this would happen, in fact had a checkup with her vet the day before. Unsure what it was, tumor/aneurism/infection etc, but hope she went peacefully and not anxiously as she had to be rushed to the vet (where she was never comfortable) for her euthanasia.

MESSAGES I RECEIVED FROM CHICA:   - So sorry about your friend's dog Chica. I'm getting a pain over my right eye, and Chica tells me it's something associated with that. It very well could have been an aneurysm that seems to have caused a heaviness in her heart...like a stroke. 

   I just googled "aneurysm" after I wrote that and  the definition says: "A brain (cerebral) aneurysm is a bulging, weak area in the wall of an artery that supplies blood to the brain. In most cases, a brain aneurysm causes no symptoms and goes unnoticed. In rare cases, the brain aneurysm ruptures, releasing blood into the skull and causing a stroke." - I believe that this is what happened to Chica. Dogs can convey how they passed, as a means to identify themselves.

   There was nothing that could have been done to help her recover, so helping her cross was the right thing to do. She thanks her mom for helping her cross and pass out of discomfort (she continued to feel a strong pressure over her right eye until she crossed and now is pain free in spirit).

  She's of course, standing again with Buddy,and she's giving her mom a smile.

THE CONFIRMATION: Thanks for replying Rob, you have no idea how bang on you are!

 Chica had sudden swelling around her right eye that morning, and some blood coming out of her ears/nose a bit before that.

My friend will probably email you herself, she was amazed at your response and is happy to hear that Chica pain free now.
