A Look at the Types of Ghosts in Malaysia

Malaysia - Image credit: www.saomaitours.com
Every culture around the world has ghost stories. In today's blog, thanks to Atlasboscura.org, we'll
explore the ghosts of Malaysia!

WHERE IS MALAYSIA? Malaysia is a Southeast Asian country occupying parts of the Malay Peninsula and the island of Borneo in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean. It's known for its beaches, rainforests and mix of Malay, Chinese, Indian and European cultural influences. The capital, Kuala Lumpur, is home to colonial buildings, busy shopping districts such as Bukit Bintang and skyscrapers.  Malaysia is separated into two main landmasses: Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia (or Malaysian Borneo). The capital city is Kuala Lumpur and the government is seated in Putrajaya, both in the southern half of Peninsular Malaysia.

WHAT KINDS OF GHOSTS ARE THERE? Hantu is the general term for all ghosts, spirits, and otherworldly beings in Malaysia and among the Malay people of maritime Southeast Asia and its diaspora. There are hundreds, probably thousands, of them, ranging from natural spirits (representations of individual rivers, trees, and lakes) to vampire-type ghosts to leprechaun-like tricksters. Some are good, some are bad, some are to be avoided, and some are like partners to the living. And they coexist with wide range of religions observed by the very diverse people of Malaysia.

WHAT IS THE PONTIANAK GHOST? The pontianak is a kind of vampire-ghost. It emerges upon the death of a woman during pregnancy or childbirth. She has the shape, usually, of a demonic woman capable of flight, who targets the blood of young children. (Alternatively, the pontianak may prey on men; these stories vary by region and teller.)

WHAT IS A HANTU TETEK GHOST? The hantu tetek, a ghost with pendulous breasts who likes to kidnap children just to play with them for awhile. She is used to explain why sometimes a child is found, unharmed, in a weird place, like deep in a bush or up a tree.

WHAT IS A TOYOL GHOST? A toyol is usually described as looking like a naked baby, though sometimes as more of a gremlin-baby. What's really weird: You can buy one. Typically one purchases a toyol from a bomoh, or medium. It wouldn’t quite be described as a purchase, since you’d be paying the bomoh for connecting you with a toyol and the spirit itself would be free. Toyol are childlike: mischievous, a little clumsy, a little needy, easily distracted. But they are known as excellent thieves. You can have your toyol go out and steal for you, though Nicholas says it’s sometimes believed that a toyol will only steal up to the dollar amount you paid for it.

WHAT IS THE HANTU POLONG? The hantu polong, is a sort of attack ghost used to inflict harm. It must be fed with blood from one’s fingers.

SEVERAL OTHER GHOSTS - The hantu buta causes blindness, hantu cika causes colic, hantu kembung is behind stomach aches. Some are more innocuous: Hantu apu is a party ghost, and so is hantu jamuan, though if it is not invited, it will wreck the festivities. Hantu lembong is a spirit of swollen growths on trees. Q&A with Rob Gutro: Is there a "Pets and the Afterlife 3" Coming? What Are you Working on Now?

Peppers will be in Pets 3
I've received several emails asking if there is a "Pets and the Afterlife 3" in the works and what it will be about, if it will differ from the others. Here are my answers!

WILL THERE BE ANOTHER "PETS AND THE AFTERLIFE" BOOK SOON?  YES!!! In fact, I'm planning a Pets 3 and 4.

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW?  At the end of March, I just released my 7th Book called "Case Files of inspired Ghost Tracking, " and am busy promoting it and my previous book "Kindred Spirits: How a Medium Befriended a Spirit."  That's what I'll be doing for the rest of the year, in addition to working on the next Pets book.

WHEN WILL PETS 3 BE READY? The next book will be about pets and the afterlife 3, focusing on dogs and coping with grief. I am going to try and get that finished by the end of this year so January 2021 would be my target date.

THERE'S ANOTHER AFTER THAT?  Yes. following "Pets and the Afterlife 3: Dogs"  will be "Pets and the Afterlife 4," about signs from spirit cats. I know it seems like a long way off but it takes a long time to put these books together and ensure they are good!
Nizi the Dachshund will be in Pets 3
HOW WILL THESE BOOKS DIFFER FROM THE FIRST TWO?
Like the first two "Pets and the Afterlife" books, these will contain experiences that people have had with the spirits of their pets communicating from the afterlife and proven messages I have received from pet spirits. What's different is that these will ALSO contain a chapter on how to cope with your grief, written by a professional. I am working with a medical psychologist for a specific chapter on how to deal with grief.
Although understanding signs from your pets in spirit should help ease your grief, a chapter providing additional counseling will also help!

FINAL THOUGHTS
I know it has been awhile. There are a lot of projects keeping me busy in addition to my full time job as a meteorologist! Hope you are safe and healthy!

A Hair-raising Sign from my Friend Jane's Spirit

Jane
Yesterday I published a blog about my friend Jane who passed on Friday, April 10 from complications connected to COVID19. She was 93, and she was my mom's best friend, but she also became my friend. The news was devastating to me as I had known Jane over my entire life. However, less than 12 hours later, she gave me a sign she was okay on the other side. Here's what happened.

In Friday night at about 6:45 p.m., I learned about her passing just 15 minutes before I did a facebook live event. One of Jane's daughters messaged me through Jane's facebook messenger and let me know (Yes, Jane at 93 had a facebook page - she was always very hip). I had 15 minutes to collect myself before the facebook live event began with my friend Brian, manager of the paranormal group called "The Ghost Pit." Brian had arranged for he and I to give an dog rescue fundraising lecture about how pets communicate from the afterlife. Although it was supposed to be in a venue in Pennsylvania, because of the brutal COVID19 outbreak, we were in our respective homes at our computers for the video event. I mentioned Jane's passing to Brian just before the show, and tried to focus on the topic. The show went well and made some money for the pitbull rescue.

After it was over, I took my empty dish (I always have 2 cookies for dessert at night) and cup (for herbal tea) and brought them to the kitchen. I usually wash them but for some reason I put them in the sink (unusual for me). The next morning, the sink would be the site of Jane's sign to me.
The long hair Jane left of the dish

In the morning when I came back into the kitchen to make breakfast for Tom and I and our dogs, I went over to the sink. On the dish that I had put there less than 8 hours before was a long strand of reddish brown hair, obviously from a woman, laying lightly on the dish. I immediately sensed Jane was there. (Jane had the color hair before she went grey).

Of course, my husband Tom came in the kitchen and I told him about it. We tried to understand how that happened. He said, "That's weird." It was. First, we are two men and have 4 very short-haired dogs. Second, we've been home bound like everyone else for the last 6 weeks. Third, it has been more than 2 or 3 months that a woman was in our home. Fourth, I put the dish in the sink myself the night before and we weren't awake overnight, and again, there isn't a woman in the house.

I knew it was Jane's hair. I knew it was her sign to me that she was okay in spirit. Now that I think about it, I recall hearing, "I'm fine, I'm fine." She told me to convey this to her daughter and family. She also said she is very much around them in spirit. She sends her love and thanks to her family She said there are 2 Phillip's there (one I know is her late husband).

So, spirits can give us all kinds of signs from the other side to let us know they're around and they are okay. Finding a strand of hair from someone in spirit is a first for me. I'm just very happy to hear from Jane.

In Memory of My Friend Jane

This has been a tough month for many people, myself included. Last week, Charlie, my friend of 23 years passed from a battle with cancer. This past weekend, I learned that my friend Jane passed away.
Jane has known me since I was born, and that's because she was my mom's best friend. Jane was 93 when she passed on Friday, April 10. She was living in a nursing home in Massachusetts, and contracted the COVID19 virus.
I have 50 plus years of wonderful memories of my mom's time spent with Jane, and the many conversations they had. Jane always made everyone smile. She has a beautiful family or grown children, and grandchildren. Jane's husband Phillip passed in 2004, and I also remember him fondly.
Often, when I was in my teens and 20s and lived at home with my parents, if Jane called, I would always talk with her for a little while before I called my mom to the phone. Jane always made you feel cared for, and she left that impression on me even as a kid. As I grew older, I would mail her my paper newsletters, and finally emailed her my daily blogs.
When my dad passed in 2008, Jane, wheelchair bound then, made it a point to be at the services for my mom and our family. My mom used to drive to visit Jane and would tell me of their great conversations.
Jane's calm demeanor, and patience beyond the understanding of any human would often calm my (emotional) mother down. Only Jane had that ability. I sometimes talked with Jane on the phone about my mom's crazy behavior when dementia had began to affect my mother. Jane was a calming voice.
It's hard to write this without having tears in my eyes. I've known Jane my entire life. She was like an aunt to me, and always offered a calm voice. I can hear her voice in my head and see her smile. I'll hold on to that for the rest of my life. Although she was my mother's best friend, Jane was also MY friend and I love her, too.
I'll miss you in the physical world, Jane, and I thank you for everything you've ever done for my mom, my family and for me. You are a light for all of humanity and continue to shine from the other side.

Spirits want us to be Smart and Considerate: Louisiana Pastor who decried COVID19 was 'hysteria' dies from it

This past Sunday, April 5, I posted a blog about the importance of praying at home, and NOT going to churches where you will infect people with the deadly Coronavirus (COVID19).
A pastor who defied that lesson and paid the price with his life from the virus and is now regretting it on the other side. He's also sorry for acting foolish and endangering the lives of many others. But it's TOO LATE. Spirits want us to learn our lessons when we're ALIVE, not after we die. As I mention in several of my books, spirits want us to take care of ourselves AND treat others as we would like to be treated (which means not infecting them with a deadly disease).
Spirits also want us to understand that you can pray or meditate from anywhere in the world. You can connect to god, whether Hindi, Christian, Jewish, or any other faith - from your own space. Spirits have seen this kind of contagion through time, and people did the right thing (distancing, sheltering and respecting each other) to get through it. Those who do not and are selfish may pay the ultimate price with their lives, as this pastor did.
Listen to spirit. Care for yourself and others- keep everyone safe. Don't be selfish, or you could be joining spirit sooner than you should, and causing the suffering and death of others.
  *********************************************************
BBC News reported on Monday, April 5, that a Louisiana Pastor who claimed that Coronavirus was a "Hoax perpetrated by the Democratic party to hurt President Trump" (quoted from the President himself and Fox News), died of the virus. THIS should be a lesson to those who listen to people who are not scientists and doctors. Here's the story> ;

Coronavirus: Pastor who decried 'hysteria' dies after attending Mardi Gras

Pastor Landon Spradlin wasn't worried about coronavirus when he went to New Orleans to preach during Mardi Gras. A month later he was dead.
"He loved to laugh. He loved to play guitar. He played guitar even when he wasn't supposed to," says Jesse Spradlin of her father, Landon.
"He was just the best man in the world."
One day when this is all over, the wife and five children of Pastor Landon Spradlin hope to hold a large celebratory memorial for him.
For now they have had to make do with a funeral at which there were just a handful in attendance, including the blues guitarist who played at the graveside.
A little over a month ago, Pastor Spradlin, who was 66, drove with his wife Jean the 900 miles (1500 km) from their home in Virginia to Louisiana for Mardi Gras.
He viewed the festivities as an opportunity, through music, to save the souls of some of the hundreds of thousands of people that would attend.
He was joined by two of his daughters who came over from Texas.
"His mission was to go into pubs, clubs and bars, play the blues and connect with musicians and just tell them that Jesus loved them," says Jesse Spradlin, 28.

Image captionPastor Spradlin (middle) and Jean on the keyboard during Mardi Gras

"Mardi Gras is like Times Square in New York during New Year's Eve. It's a sea of people just drinking and partying," she says. "He was loud and laughing and in his element."
Over recent years Pastor Spradlin had realised a dream of using the preaching he had honed in churches across three states and taking it to the streets through the medium he loved.
He had been playing instruments since the age of four and in 2016 was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, but it was religion that he felt had saved him from alcoholism and drug addiction in his twenties.
Those dark years are why he now had a particular affinity for those who felt down and out, something he could relate to.
At Mardi Gras, the family band played in New Orleans' busy Jackson Square, unaware of the threat they faced.
"I don't even remember us talking about the virus," says Naomi Spradlin, 26. "With what's happened we keep looking back, and we didn't talk about it once."
They were not the only ones. Even though it had been more than a month since the first coronavirus case in the US, Mardi Gras went on as planned.

Officials in the city now blame government inaction for what appears to have been a large spike in cases that followed.
Pastor Spradlin was one of those who became ill, but tested negative for Covid-19. Even as he was sick, he posted on social media about "hysteria" surrounding the virus.
On the 13th of March Pastor Spradlin shared on Facebook a misleading post comparing swine flu and coronavirus deaths.
It suggested that Barack Obama and Donald Trump respectively had been treated very differently by the media and that it was a politically motivated ploy to harm President Trump.
Earlier the very same day, the president himself had insinuated something very similar at a news conference.

Media captionHow Trump's attitude toward coronavirus has shifted

Pastor Spradlin's son, Landon Isaac, 32, told me that he and his father had talked and agreed about what they felt was an irrational frenzy and fear mongering about the virus, perhaps because it was an election year.
"I want to say outright though, dad didn't think it was a hoax, he knew it was a real virus," says Landon Isaac.
"But he did put up that post because he was frustrated that the media was propagating fear as the main mode of communication," he told me.
By mid-March though, Pastor Spradlin's health suddenly took a turn for the worse. He and his wife decided to make the long drive back from New Orleans to their home in Virginia.
"I spoke to him five minutes before he collapsed in North Carolina," says Landon Isaac.
"I could tell his breathing was getting bad. And I just said that you've got to get home. But he didn't make it."

Image captionPastor Spradlin's funeral had only a handful of guests and no immediate family

Pastor Spradlin was taken to hospital in North Carolina where they discovered he had developed pneumonia in both lungs and he now also tested positive for the coronavirus.
After eight days in intensive care, Pastor Spradlin died.
"It's a lot like Dad was our support column and somebody kicked out that support column. It feels like the roof is falling down on all of our heads right now," says Landon Isaac.
For days, he and his four siblings had to communicate with their mother through the glass door of her home. The funeral that has just taken place happened the day after Jean Spradlin's quarantine finally ended.
"We just never thought our father would pass away because of this. But he wasn't the type of person to just live in fear and let it rob him of the joy of the life that he had," says Jesse Spradlin.
