Horses See Spirits

I gave a talk and did a book signing on Saturday at the Largo-Kettering Library in Maryland and it was well-received. There were a lot of folks who had their own experiences and they shared them with me. One gentleman who had moved from the African Continent to the U.S. told me that in his homeland it is widely known that horses can see Earth-bound ghosts and spirits (who have crossed).
I firmly believe that horses, like dogs and cats have that ability. Dogs, cats and horses, moreso than any other domesticated animal hear at higher decibel ranges (that digital recorders pick up, but humans don't hear at that level). Each of those types of animal also have the intelligence of a 4-5 year old human child (read Dr. Stanley Coren's "The Intelligence of Dogs" (cats and horses). Further, they have different cones and rods in their eyes than humans, that enable them to better sense motion.
The gentlemen proceeded to tell me more about the African belief. He said that it's known that when a horse sees a ghost or spirit, you can look directly in their eyes and see the ghost that they are looking at. Fascinating! I was so glad he shared that story with me.

  1. I know my horse see long deceased horseman from our Club area who are buried on the hill above left of our parcel of land to the big indoor area that most of them built.
It happens at night or at dusk when I am leading him in or out of the indoor area back to his stall I board him at this is after I have shut off the lights to the ally and area, My horse jumps out of his skin about 90% of the time.

  2. Very interesting story!

Have you ever heard the story about the famous Secretariat's ghost? I read about it online ages ago and I wish I'd kept the link! It's been claimed that at dusk people have heard the thundering hooves of a very fast horse at the Meadow Farm in Virginia (Secretariat's home/birthplace). I never got to see Secretariat race... I'd love to hear his spirit pound the dirt!

  3. Hi interested in others opinions there is a spot on our trail ride that our horses are terrified of as we approach they try to turn around if we make them walk on they snort and sweat and are very frightened and when we do turn around they literally bolt until away from area these are really slow forward moving Clydesdales that is an effort to get them to trot let alone gallop there is also a definite cold spot near a big concrete water tank(no lid) can they be sensing something bad

    1. Thanks for your comment. It may not be something bad that they're seeing- just someone who passed. Sometimes when horses, dogs or cats see spirits or ghosts, they can sometimes be unnerved by them. They can hear and see them, and sometimes the entities don't have any scent (it takes a ghost or spirit a lot of energy to just appear, so the odor or scent is not as important when they appear). The lack of scent will confuse a horse/dog or cat.
