Article: 7 Steps To Finding A Lost Animal

Our dog Sprite from 2013.
I've received quite a few emails asking me if someone's lost pet is still alive so I thought I'd share this
article from Animal Wellness to help others do things to find their pet and alleviate their concern.

7 Steps To Finding A Lost Animal
Source: https://animalwellnessmagazine.com/7-steps-to-finding-a-lost-animal/

Over the years, your perfect pooch or kitty has wiggled his way into your home and your heart, earning himself a starring role on your family tree. And then the unthinkable happens. He escapes through an open door, jumps a fence, or takes off after a squirrel – and before you know it, he’s lost, despite your frantic searching and calling.
“Most people believe their animals would never go missing, when, in fact, statistics show that one in three will go missing in their lifetime,” says Landa Coldiron, animal detective and owner of Lost Pet Detection. “Many times when people call me, they feel they have done everything possible, when they have not even scratched the surface of what needs to be done.”
If your companion ever goes astray, don’t despair. Follow these seven steps to help bring him safely home again.
1. Plan, don’t panic
It’s easy to panic and imagine all kinds of horrible scenarios when your animal gets lost. You may even be experiencing some of the stages of grief. Hold it right there! He’s missing; he’s out there somewhere, perhaps frightened and seeking your comforting presence. Wasting precious time and energy worrying and speculating is not helping. Planning will help – and put you on the fast track to a successful recovery.
“Just running around, calling for your animal and trying random things at random times and locations can be a huge waste of time,” says Annalisa Berns, animal detective and owner of Pet Search and Rescue. “A plan helps you focus on what you are doing – and what to do next. A plan helps you prioritize the most effective techniques to try first, and what can be put off. It also helps you identify what tasks you can ask friends and family to help with.”
2. Ask for help
You may feel like shutting out the world and doing all the search work yourself. This is never a good idea. “People who work alone in their efforts to recover a lost animal are at risk of discouragement and burnout,” says animal detective Kat Albrecht, founder of Missing Pet Partnership and author of The Lost Pet Chronicles and Dog Detectives.
Friends and family serve as a support system. They also add strength to your search, and that could mean the difference between finding your best friend or not. “For most missing animal scenarios, it is a volume game,” says private investigator Karin TarQwyn. “In my experience, 90% of all missing animals are found due to other people’s eyes and ears. The more people who know your animal is missing, the higher the likelihood of recovery. This is no different from a missing person investigation, except there’s no help from outside agencies and community groups.”
3. Pick up the phone
Talking on the phone is probably the last thing you’ll feel like doing when you can’t find your dog or cat. Being out on the street searching may make you feel more productive. But placing a few all-important calls to get the word out about your missing friend is an important step.
Five locations could be beneficial to your search: local animal control, animal-related businesses, animal shelters, veterinary offices and animal rescue groups. Informing local animal workers and employees about your predicament will raise awareness and keep more people on the lookout for your companion.

4. Supersize your search
Posting pint-sized flyers on telephone poles, stop signs and store windows near your home may seem an effective way to get the word out about your missing animal, but to really attract the public’s attention, supersize your search by using huge posters. It’s far more proactive. “Giant neon posters are by far the number one method to recover lost animals and return them to their rightful families,” says Kat. “Follow the 5 + 5 + 55 rule – five words drivers can read within five seconds while driving 55 miles an hour. In our experience, big strategically-placed posters are one of the most successful techniques for recovering a lost animal.”
5. Network online
Social networking sites aren’t just for catching up with friends from high school or keeping track of family milestones. They are also one of the number one ways for spreading the word about missing animals.
Social media networks such as Facebook allow you to immediately send a “call to arms” about your search to your nearest and dearest – and give your friends the ability to send the alert to everyone in their network, and so on. With the power of social networking sites, half the United States could know about the quest for your dog or cat in less than 30 minutes!
MY TIPS:    **Some Areas have www.Craigslist.com with a Lost Pets section; and there's also www.nextdoor.com that connects you to YOUR neighborhood.   There are also FACEBOOK groups for lost pets in various counties ( just put "lost pets" and your county name to search)
6. Consult a professional
Consistency is key when you start searching for your animal companion. But if you find you are getting nowhere, change things up and think outside the box. It could be the very thing that helps pinpoint his location and bring him home safe and sound. “If you’ve done everything traditional to find your animal, and you haven’t found him, it’s time to think about other techniques and strategies – and consult a professional,” says Annalisa. An animal detective is specially trained in search and rescue and can employ methods you may not know about or have access to. “Of course some animals return home on their own,” Annalisa adds. “However, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association and the California Veterinary Medical Association, the chances of a lost animal coming home on his own is only 11%. Don’t count on that.”
7. Just say no…to giving up!
You may feel drained, emotionally and physically, but throwing in the towel and giving up too soon, maybe before your search has even truly started, may be the worst mistake you can make. “Most people become disheartened after only a day or two when their animal goes missing,” says Annalisa. “Keep focused and keep searching – and not just for a few hours or days. I strongly suggest that people search for a minimum of two weeks – if not longer.”
Searching for a lost dog or cat is never easy or pleasant. But following these steps will greatly enhance your chances of finding him again. And recovering a missing companion is the most rewarding feeling in the world!

In the news: Woman Suffers Heart Problems After Dog Dies

Joanie Simpson's Yorkshire terrier, Meha. (Cr:Joanie Simpson)
Since I wrote my book "Pets and the Afterlife" in 2013 and the follow up "Pets and the Afterlife 2" I've been receiving a lot of emails and messages from people who lost their pets. I'm happy to try and provide a message or two from their pets to provide some comfort and a recent study shows the importance of those messages.
Losing a pet is like losing a child. Yes, they're different from human children, but we're 100% responsible for them. It can be devastating. An earlier study showed that we often grieve MORE for our pets than people who passed. - Rob

Woman Suffers Heart Problems After Dog Dies
Article from the Washington Post Oct. 19, 2017(Houston, TX)  --  Doctors say she almost died of a broken heart.  Joanie Simpson was airlifted to a Houston, Texas hospital earlier this year with what seemed to be a heart attack.  In fact, it was a syndrome that looks a lot like a heart attack, usually triggered by the emotions that flood in with the loss of a loved one.  In this case, it was Simpson's Yorkshire terrier.

The case was detailed last week in the "New England Journal of Medicine" as a clear case of what's sometimes called "broken heart syndrome."

A recent study found that people who care for ill pets suffer real physical effects from the burden, including stress and anxiety.

Q&A with Medium Rob Gutro: What to Expect at Medium Group Events

Here's a question I received recently about people going to a group session with a medium:

Q: What can I expect when I go to a group session with a Medium?
A: Not everyone gets a reading, and sometimes the person you want to come through doesn't come through. Sometimes people you would never expect come through, like an uncle you never met in life but guides you from the afterlife.

Q: Will the spirit I want to talk with come through?
A:  It all depends if that person has something to tell you, or if they have a bold enough personality.
My dad used to come through to me a lot after he passed. But once my mom passed, (She used to do all the talking for both of them), she's now the only one who comes through. Dad  just sits back and let her do the talking from the other side, as he used to do in life. :)

Q: Have you ever participated in group readings and did you get messages?
A: Group sessions are interesting and can be overwhelming to me because there is so much energy (living and dead) in the room. I've done a couple with my friend Ruthie Larkin, the Beantown medium in Boston and Barb Mallon in VA. Yes, I've given quite a few messages to some folks at various events.

Q: Do you do group readings?
A:  No.  I don't do group readings because I'm not as disciplined as other mediums and prefer email readings where I can concentrate.  People can email me at Rgutro@gmail.com.

Thanksgiving: Your loved ones in spirit are around your table

Holidays are a prime time to get messages from spirits of loved ones who have passed away. So today, Thanksgiving (here in the U.S.), pay special attention because there may be subtle signs your spirits of your loved ones are around the table (people or pets).

As I mention in my books "Ghosts and Spirits: Insights from a Medium" and "Lessons Learned from Talking to the Dead," our loved ones who passed are with us during holidays, birthdays and anniversaries.

Think of it this way: During a holiday, birthday or anniversary you will usually either have friends and relatives over for dinner or call them and wish them a great day. It's no different from how spirits behave on the other side. They want to do the same for us, because we can't pick up the phone - so they come to us!

People who have passed and crossed over become spirits. Those who choose to stay behind on Earth are ghosts. Spirits have the ability to to come to people anywhere in the world, and even come to multiple people at the same time. Whenever the Holidays roll around, they are known to try and pass messages that they're there with the family as well.

So, how do you look for signs from them? If you turn on the radio today, Thanksgiving, and you hear their favorite Christmas song (because radio stations are already playing them) - the spirit has influenced you to turn on the radio to know they're with you.
- You may find yourself doing or saying something that your late mother, father, sister, brother or friend would be doing, or saying.
- Spirits can influence us to do things and say things they used to. - You may also see someone that resembles a late loved one if you're traveling about today.
- Look for pennies or other coins ;on the ground. Check the year, too- because it has some significance. Last year on Thanksgiving week when I was out walking our dogs, I found a Quarter with the year 1981 on it. That was the year my grandmother passed, so guess who dropped that coin for me?

Wishing you a wonderful thanksgiving. Just remember to give thanks for the spirits that will always be around you!

Video: A Ghostly Confederate Soldier at Gettysburg?

The Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War was one of the bloodiest battles ever. I've been there, and as a medium have a difficult time focusing because of all of the residual energy of fear and anxiety, and the number of actual ghosts that still haunt the battlefields.
In 2013, two men decided to test that idea, and what they found has gone viral on Reddit. Keep your eyes on the cannons. Watch and pay close attention around the 1:45 mark. It appears to be a   Ghostly Confederate Soldier walking by the cannons before disappearing.

Tarot Tuesday with Joy Andreasen: "IV or Four of Wands Card"

Joy Andreasen  provides the interpretation of Tarot cards on these Tarot Tuesdays: Today's card  is the Four of Wands
It is time to celebrate an important event or accomplishment! It could be a wedding, a promotion, or even a birthday! Take some time to be grateful for all of the steps you have taken to reach this milestone and those people who were instrumental in helping you get to where you are today. If you are not completely happy with where you are, then perhaps make a plan of action for making some changes to get you to where you need to be. Every day be thankful that you have made it this far and make plans for your next milestone. Also, however, is the feeling of knowing that you are fine right here, right now. If you are contemplating huge life changes and become overwhelmed, celebrate the baby steps needed to get you where you need to be. Every day is a celebration and a new beginning.
